Chapter 24
Mama and Bruce had not been married long at all when he told her that he had to go away. He’s a military man so he said he would have to go away sometimes. On the day he left he gave me, Jason and Phil big hugs and then he turned around to kiss Mama and she hung on to him so tight it looked like she was stuck to his face.
Mama went on goin’ to work and comin’ home just like always, only since she met Bruce she never even talked about bein’ tired no more.
I could tell that Jason and Phil was so happy to have a daddy. I saw on television that boys like to have a man around to do man things with like choppin’ wood or something.
I told my friends at school all about my daddy. I told ‘em he’s probably gonna buy me my own bicycle because he’s my real daddy now and he loves me, he said so himself. I hope it’s yellow because it is the color of happiness and still my favorite.
