Chapter 23
Mine and Mama’s dream came true! Bruce Dean asked her to marry him and of course, she said yeah. He even asked us kids if he could be our daddy. I was jumpin’ up and down and cryin’ all over the place. I never even knew there was such a thing as happy tears! I hugged him so tight it’s a wonder his head didn’t pop clean off!
Aint Ruby told Mama that maybe she shouldn’t move so fast but Mama got all mad, so she said for her to just think carefully before she jumped. I don’t know if Mama thought too much though because they ran off to the courthouse and Bruce Dean became her husband number three.
He moved into the little house with us and now Mama walks around all goo-goo eyed like she’s walkin’ on clouds. She kisses on him like a teenager and I can’t even remember the last time she screamed at me.
